Fraud/Scam Alert
On 02/02/12 a Derry citizen received a suspicious phone call.  The caller stated they were from Citizens Bank and needed to confirm the residents information so that they could be entered into a promotional offer.  The caller provided the residents name and social security number but then asked the resident to confirm their banking account number and routing information.  The resident wisely did not provide this information and contacted the Derry Police.  Our Detectives contacted Citizen’s Bank security and confirmed that this was a scam. 


As a reminder, never provide your personal information to a stranger over the phone. Here are a few other indicators that it might be a scam…


If someone says;


  • YOU’VE WON A PRIZE BUT MUST PAY TO RECEIVE IT.
  • MUST PAY RIGHT AWAY.
  • CALLERS OR SALESPEOPLE WHO WON’T PROVIDE WRITTEN INFORMATION.
  • OFFERS THAT PROMISE SIZABLE RETURNS WITH MINIMAL RISK.
  • REQUESTS FOR DONATIONS THAT DON’T DISCLOSE HOW THE MONEY WILL BE USED.
  • OFFERS TO “REPAIR” YOUR CREDIT IN EXCHANGE FOR AN UP-FRONT FEE.
  • PERSISTANT, PUSHY, INTIMIDATING SALES TACTICS
  • OFFERS TO RECOUP MONEY YOU’VE LOST IN ANOTHER FRAUDULENT SCHEME.
  • A REQUEST THAT YOU KEEP THE OFFER A SECRET.
