Lieutenant William Rutherford serves the Derry Fire Department as the Director of Mechanical Division. He is responsible for maintaining all fire department apparatus, staff vehicles, and small tools and equipment; performing all major and minor repairs.  Lt. Rutherford is also responsible for all pump testing, hose testing, and aerial and ground ladder testing. Additionally, he manages the division’s budget and performs all record keeping and data entry.

Lt. Rutherford has been a mechanic since 1968, including four years of service in the United States Navy as a diesel mechanic.  He has earned a Masters in ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) for both automobile and medium/heavy trucks; and he has earned a Masters in EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) for both fire apparatus and ambulances.

Lt. Rutherford has been in the fire service since 1990 and is a certified Firefighter III, Fire Officer II, and Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate. Prior to joining the Derry Fire Department in 1998, he was a member of Milford, NH Fire Department and Milford Ambulance.

Lt. Rutherford has specialized training on Waterous Fire Pumps, Akron nozzle and valves, and maintenance and repair of Amkus extrication tools. He serves as a member of the EVT Certification Committee which reviews and writes tests for nationwide mechanic certifications.
